History

In 1945, Kyrgyz Women’s Pedagogical College (from 1952 V. V. Mayakovsky Kyrgyz Women’s Pedagogical Institute) was established, and the same year the Department of "Foreign Languages" was founded.

Since 1955, the admission of students in the specialty "German as a second foreign language" began. The Department of Foreign Languages served the non-linguistic faculties of the Kyrgyz Women’s Pedagogical Institute.

In 1960, the first foreign language teachers for schools of the republic were trained.

In 1968, the Department of Foreign Languages was divided into two departments: English and German.

Since 1972, the Mayakovsky Institute has established a faculty of Foreign Languages, which began to train German language teachers, and since 1980, they also began to train English language teachers.

International Languages and Cultures Institute was founded in 1994, Humanities Lyceum in 1996, Linguistics Faculty in 2005. The institute was renamed several times: in 2019 – Manas Studies and Linguistics Institute, in 2021 – Computational Linguistics and Intercultural Communications Institute, and since 2022 the institute has been named after Sh. Kadyrova and is called World Languages and International Relations Institute. Director of Sh. Kadyrova World Languages and International Relations Institute is PhD, professor N. K. Sartbekova.

 

Significant milestones and achievements

Our graduates work in public and private schools, universities, international corporations, translation service centers, media and PR agencies, research institutes and centers, in tourism and hotel business and in other fields. Graduates of the institute work all over the world. Alumni Association of Sh. Kadyrova World Languages and International Relations Institute is a voluntary association of graduates of the institute. The main task of the association is to organize and develop the relationship between graduates, support professional, cultural, creative and business contacts with the institute, which helps to enhance its reputation. The Association is actively engaged in its work.

Memorandum of cooperation was signed with Eszterházy Károly Catholic University (Hungary). On May 15, 2023, "Center for Hungarian Language and Culture" was opened in the Institute.

On August 25, 2023 Center for Persian Language and Iranian Culture was opened.

International cooperation

  1. With the support of the US Embassy and the Ministry of Education and Science of the Kyrgyz Republic, within the STEM program, teachers of the Department of Natural and Exact Sciences of I. Arabaev KSU are taught English on two-year program by the Lingua Public Foundation.
  2. Within the framework of the EPIC project (A course on the introduction of English into programming), with the support of the US Embassy a training on "Gamification (PBL - project-based learning)" for 40 teachers from Sh. Kadyrova Institute of World Languages and International Relations was conducted.
  3. Every year, students participate in the Spelling Bee competition, which takes place at the Kant-American Center, and win prizes.
  4. English Talking Club is a voluntary organization initiated by Fulbright Assistant Eleanor Grinnell.
  5. Teachers take the Arizona University OPEN Program, supported by the U.S. Embassy.
  6. In 2023, training was conducted under the ADB FIRST Conception program.
  7. On December 2, 2024, professors from the University of Nottingham Trent and a representative of the International University of Westminster in Tashkent visited I. Arabaev Kyrgyz State University. The guests discussed with the management and teachers the implementation of inclusive methods and further cooperation.

 

Academic mobility programs

Joint scientific, educational and methodological work is underway with universities in Hungary, Austria, Germany, Iran, Kazakhstan, Korea, China, Cyprus, Turkey, Uzbekistan and Russia in the field of modern issues of education, communication technologies and culturally focused intercultural communication.

 

Students’ Academic mobility

From 2021-2022 to 2023-2024 academic years, 12 students studied at L. N. Gumilyov Eurasian University (Kazakhstan), 21 students studied at the Korean Language Faculty at Kyungwoon University (South Korea). In 2024, 3 students are studying at Xinjiang Normal University in China.

There are 6 students studying within internal mobility, and active work is underway on academic mobility with various universities in Kyrgyzstan.

Students’ Academic mobility is one of the university's priorities, which contributes to improving the quality of education, the effectiveness of scientific research, the creation of external and internal integration links and the fulfillment of the university's mission.

Students’ Academic mobility is implemented within the framework of interuniversity agreements, exchange programs, scholarship and international programs, memoranda aimed at:

  1. Student exchange programs;
  2. Internships (including language ones);
  3. Scientific practice;
  4. Participation in summer schools.

 

Supplementary education programs

STEAM education is an integrated educational scheme, an innovative educational technology based on the combination of five areas: science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics. All these are taught in English.

In the 2023-2024 academic year, the Institute of Natural Sciences and Tourism opened an English-language study group in Chemistry with additional specialization in Biology at the Department of Chemistry and Education Technology.

Pilot groups have been opened at the Institute of Pedagogy and Psychology, the Institute of Natural Sciences and Tourism, and the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics, where all classes are conducted in English.

Since October 2024, university administration and directors of structural divisions have completed English language courses.

English language courses are offered to the teachers of the Institute of Natural Sciences and Tourism.

 

Methodological support

Methodologists help students to participate in talking clubs, develop language skills and provide support. In talking clubs, professional guidance helps students improve their teaching and conduct lessons. The advice of methodologists contributes to a deep understanding of the material and the improvement of teaching skills. Training is based on real situations and real teaching conditions.

The English Language Technology, Theory and Practice Department’s project of Sh. Kadyrova World Languages and International Relations Institute won a grant on inclusive education in partnership with universities of the UK and Uzbekistan.

The English Language Technology, Theory and Practice Department:

Fundamental and Applied Linguistics Department:

  • linguistic research of Kyrgyz works of literature translation into unrelated languages.

Oriental Studies and International Relations Department:

  • comparative research of the Kyrgyz language with oriental languages;
  • study of international relations of the Kyrgyz Republic with Oriental countries.

The German Language Department:

Student life

Students of Sh. Kadyrova World Languages and International Relations Institute Nuraiym Akbarova and Aziza Abdrazakova are presidential scholarship holders.

 

Material and technical facilities

Lecture halls, computer lab, archive, laboratories.

The language laboratory is a key element of the educational process of the educational institution. Tests are conducted to assess the level of English language proficiency, students' progress is monitored and conditions for their further development are created. An important area is the organization of students’ clubs: the Talking Club and the Movie Club.
