Libraries of Kyrgyzstan make a great contribution to the formation of the statehood of our country and occupy a special place in the history and cultural life of our people. They became the first cultural and educational institutions to go through an age-old indirect path. In the early 70s of the XIX century in the Turkestan Territory, including in the areas of residence of the Kyrgyz, the first folk libraries were opened. The first library was built in 1870. Born in 1902 in the city of Tokmok. On May 14, a public library was opened in the city of Karakol. After the Great October Revolution, from the moment of the establishment of Soviet power, schools and libraries were organized on the Kyrgyz land, one of the tasks of which was to eradicate the illiteracy of the population. It was during these years that red houses, red corners, red gray houses, which are examples of libraries, began to open within the framework of the slogan "Elimination of illiteracy." In 1920, 29 educational institutions were organized in Przhevalsky district, and in 1924 the number of libraries opened in Kyrgyzstan reached 44, the book fund amounted to 54 thousand books. In 1934, the Republican Library (now the National Library) was first opened, in 1943 - the library of the Academy of Sciences of the Kyrgyz Republic. Libraries still provide services to the population. Currently, the number of public libraries in our country exceeds 1000. At the same time, in Kyrgyzstan, the population is served by libraries of 66 higher educational institutions, more than 100 - secondary, more than 2000 - schools.
